December 3

Tonight, Columbia hosts two major holiday-themed events: A Starry Night in Five Points and Mingle & Jingle on Main Street. A Starry Night runs from 4 to 8 p.m. and features complimentary horse carriage rides and hot chocolate; a holiday-themed photo booth; a DJ; deals at participating Five Points businesses; a visit from Santa, who will be hanging out at the Hootie monument (singing “Hold My Hand,” perhaps?), and much more. December 4 

If you’re a Scrooge, you might as well just stop reading right now, because almost everything happening in Columbia these days is Christmas-related. (If you’re non-Christian or non-religious, just hang in there: It will all be over soon.) Today, you’ve got four— count ‘em, four — Christmas events to compete for your attention.

• The Columbia Classical Ballet kicks off its three-day run of Nutcracker performances with a 7:30 p.m. show at the Koger Center. This marks the company’s first major production since its studios were flooded in October. Additional performances are on Saturday at 3 and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $5 to $32; visit columbiaclassicalballet.com to order.
• Today marks the start of the Lexington Snowball Festival, which begins from 6 to 8 p.m. with a carnival and concert in Lexington Square Park and culminates Sunday at 3:30 p.m. with a parade; see lexsc.com for more info.
• Also today: On Stage Productions in West Columbia presents the original show A Twisted Carol: A Jukebox Musical, which brings Scrooge and other Dickens characters together with some newly created ones; show time is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $19. Visit onstagesc.com for more info.
• Last but not least: Columbia Children’s Theatre presents Jingle Arrgh The Way, which is — you guessed it — a pirate-themed Christmas show. December 5

• “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” How’s that Christmas spirit holding up? You’d better have some left in the tank, because today is the Carolina Carillon Parade, Columbia’s longest-running holiday parade. This year’s event, the 62nd, will roll down Gervais Street beginning at 9:45 a.m. with floats, marching bands and more, starting from the corner of Gervais and Bull streets and heading west. This year’s grand marshal is the national champion USC equestrian team. Visit carolinacarillon.com for more info.
• It would be a stretch to say that the Saturnalia Festival at the S.C. State Museum has nothing to do with Christmas, because the Roman celebration of Saturnalia predated Christmas and was eventually absorbed by it as the Romans converted to Christianity. But, it has a lot less to do with Christmas than most other holiday events happening this week. So, if you’re looking to check it out, it’s running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Celebrate Krampusnacht in Columbia! Krampusmass 2015 celebrates that most excellent of Christmas folklore villains, Krampus — a demon who used to be really into baking naughty kids into pies until Saint Nicholas pulled a Bilbo-Baggins-what-has-it-got-in-its-pocketses type trick on him and got him to just hand out spankings and coal instead. (Seriously, Google it.) The Kraumpusnacht involves people dressing up like Krampus and reveling hard through town, whipping out spankings to the naughty. It’s Christmas for people who only like Halloween, basically. Columbia’s celebration is the longest-running traditional Krampuslauf in the country, so don’t miss out on your chance to be part of something truly weird and fun. Things kick off with a drink at The Whig first, then a meetup at the State House in front of the Christmas tree at 8 p.m. for pictures and such. Then it’s back to The Whig for drinks and carousing around the Vista, making the naughty atone.

December 6

For a 10th straight year, longtime Free Times music contributor Kevin Oliver has organized the Christmas at Red Bank concert, featuring a selection of local and regional musicians who will each tackle a pair of holiday tunes, performing them during an intimate evening at Red Bank United Methodist Church. The 6:30 p.m. event is free, but donations to Lexington Interfaith Community Services are strongly encouraged.

December 7

Since Georgia O’Keeffe: Her Carolina Story opened at the Columbia Museum of Art in October, a solid number of events have tackled the artist’s work and influence from a variety of different angles. A Night With Anita tackles a different aspect, with Meeghan Kane, a professor at Benedict College and the editor of the relatively new site Auntie Bellum (billed as “an honest, unapologetic voice for Southern women”), and Graham Duncan, a manuscript expert with the University of South Carolina, delving into the life of Anita Pollitzer, friend and informal agent to O’Keeffe. December 8

• Three Irish Tenors-Christmas from Dublin 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The popular trio’s performance will feature holiday favorites such as The Little Drummer Boy,” Adeste Fideles,” Silent Night,” Saviour’s Day” and O Holy Night, as well as Danny Boy.” On its sixth American tour, the group sings songs and arias that appeal to all generations. • Back in October, a lot of events were cancelled or postponed because of the flood. One of those was a concert by the South Carolina Philharmonic, which was rescheduled for tonight. But the program has changed, to reflect the fact that the concert — dubbed A Concert for Columbia — is now dedicated to flood relief and first responders. What’s on the program? That would be the monumental and glorious Ninth Symphony by Beethoven. (If you think you don’t know it, you will when you hear the “Ode to Joy” finale.) December 9

Given all the revitalization along Columbia’s Main Street, the question is no longer “What can you do on Main Street?” but “What can’t you do on Main Street?” One reliable amenity is the Columbia Museum of Art’s Chamber Music on Main series, which returns tonight with an ensemble including Phillip Bush on piano, Yehonatan Berick on violin, Nicholas Cords on viola and Edward Arron, the series’ renowned artistic director, on cello. The program includes works by Mozart, Mahler, John Musto and Fauré. Admission to the 7 p.m. concert costs $35; $28 for members; $5 for students. Head to columbiamuseum.org to find out more.

While it’s important to make a home look neat, stylish, and inviting to a potential home buyer from a visual point of view, sometimes we forget to make sure that the home smells great before a showing. Smells triggers memory, which triggers emotion and the wrong emotion can quickly turn off a potential buyer.

A problem with smells is that when you get used to them, you do not register them. Yet others arriving in the house will definitely detect them. A good example of smells are pets and cigarette smoke. If you have pets, remove the cat litter, dog bedding and other things that may have smells soaked into them. Make sure the bathrooms are particularly clean. Also remove the garbage from the kitchen and make sure that there are no old-food smells (check the refrigerator too).

If everything is clean, then the home will smell clean. However, some people like to add fragrance and this is fine as long as it’s not overdone. Remember that what’s pleasant to you may not be unpleasant to others. Another factor to consider is that many air fresheners contain harmful ingredients that can be harsh on people with allergies and asthma.

I would like to share with you some recipes that I found on TheYummyLife. This website shows you how to make Natural Room Scents. Please visit their website for the complete article with pictures. These recipes are easy to make and can be made ahead and frozen for future use.

The following combinations seem to work well, however they can be altered to your liking. Use heat resistant glass jars such as mason jars. Fill with the ingredients and add water before heating.

•  Oranges, cinnamon & cloves (allspice and anise are optional). This combination has a wonderful lasting aroma and it carries into multiple rooms. It can be reheated to scent your rooms for several days.
• Lemon, rosemary, & vanilla. A similar scented water is often simmering in Williams-Sonoma stores.
• Lime, thyme, mint & vanilla extract. This combination has a fresh, pleasant scent.
• Orange, ginger (fresh or powdered), and almond extract. This is a sweet, delicious scent.
• Pine or cedar twigs (or other fragrant twigs), bay leaves, and nutmeg. These scents combine for a complex aroma. If you have whole nutmeg, grate off the outer surface--this will release the scent. Add the whole nutmeg piece along with the gratings.

There are different ways to activate the scents. You can simmer them on the stove, using a slow cooker, a fondue pot, a mug warmer or a candle warmer.

A hint of fragrance may be welcoming, but keep in mind that even if it’s a pleasant scent, it can be a distraction because some people subconsciously dedicate time and energy to figuring out what the aroma is instead of focusing in the home.

Each year on November 11^th, we take time to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Veterans Day is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, and marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

Current Update of Columbia SC Real Estate Market

The third quarter of 2015 has ticked its last tock with the hands pointing firmly upon a reliable clock of a market. Although noon and 6:30 fluctuations are present even within the same states and cities, the overall tempo of real estate potential is experiencing a healthy number of good omens. The job market has shown continual improvement, jobless rates are down, real average hourly and weekly earnings have been up and there has been good news in new household formation.

New Listings were up 19 percent to 1368. Pending Sales decreased 7.6 percent to 802. Inventory grew 17.4 percent to 5829 units.

Prices moved higher as Median Sales Price was up .6 percent to $149,882.
Days on market decreased 16.8 percent to 84 days, the tenth consecutive month of year-over-year declines. Monthly Supply of Inventory remained flat at 6.2

With positive economic news coming from many angles, there are no imminent factors to prepare for beyond the typical seasonal drop-off. From the mouths of market analyzing pundits, we are in the midst of one of the healthiest housing markets in the past 15 years. The one thing we were anticipating in September, an increase in interest rates, did not happen.

Halloween is a fun time for children, who can dress up in costumes, enjoy parties, and eat yummy treats. This celebration also provides a chance to get physical activity, and focus on safety.

Check out these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters.

ALL DRESSED UP:

Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes.
When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.
Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.
Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as "one size fits all," or "no need to see an eye specialist," obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost/

CARVING A NICHE:

Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting.
Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest.
Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and should never be left unattended.

HOME SAFE HOME:

To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations.
Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs.
Wet leaves or snow should be swept from sidewalks and steps.
Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.
ON THE TRICK-OR-TREAT TRAIL:

A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.
If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home.
Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat.
Because pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to children on Halloween, remind Trick-or-Treaters:
Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going.
Remember reflective tape for costumes and trick-or-treat bags.
Carry a cellphone for quick communication.
Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.
If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic.
Never cut across yards or use alleys.
Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom). Never cross between parked cars or out driveways.
Don't assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn't mean others will!
Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

HEALTHY HALLOWEEN:

A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.
Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home, such as coloring books or pens and pencils.
Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
Try to ration treats for the days following Halloween.

As we turn the page to the second quarter of 2015, a proliferation of new listings is expected in most markets across the U.S. Spring is traditionally the commonplace time of the year that we see some of the most desirable gems polished for eager buyers. Though some Google searches and Twitter posts will blatantly offer pessimism about the state of the housing market, on-the-street evidence does not support bad tidings.
New Listings were down 2.8 percent to 1,717. Pending Sales increased 3.0 percent to 951. Inventory shrank 6.4 percent to 6,234 units.
Prices were still soft as Median Sales Price was down 0.2 percent to $145,000. Days on Market increased 2.0 percent to 103 days. Months Supply of Inventory was down 17.4 percent to 7.1 months, indicating that demand increased relative to supply.
The national homeownership percentage is the lowest since 1993, when Jurassic Park was the highest-grossing movie. Rental prices continue to astonish with accelerated price growth, which may cause some to think twice before locking in a 12-month lease. Lending practices and mortgage rates will also have a decided effect on the number of buyers who will become homeowners this year. With the release of Jurassic World this month, we are reminded of cyclical conversations in both real estate and moviemaking.

The Village of Sandhills is a shopping center in Northeast Columbia. It is located on 300-acres. The Village of Sandhills has residential living as well as over one million square feet of retail space, restaurants, and a movie theater. The Village of Sandhills is beautiful and has fountains, sidewalks and a village type atmosphere.

Sesquicentennial State Park is located on Two Notch Road in Northeast Columbia. Sesqui is a 1,419 acre park with a 30 acre lake surrounded by trails and natural areas. This is a great park for mountain biking, fishing, boating and campouts. This park also has picnic areas. Sesqui is home to a 1700’s log home, one of the oldest buildings in Richland County. Sesqui Park is open year round.

Donna Cicerone and her husband Paul want to put their three-bedroom home on the market.  First, they have to find a house to buy.

The Cicerones live in the Boston area, where all but three weekends this year have had snow, sleet or rain. Bad weather has forced them to cancel house-hunting plans half a dozen times, they said. When they have found a house they liked amid a limited supply of properties, they’ve been outbid.

“The moment we sign a contract to buy, we’re putting our house on the market,” said Donna Cicerone. “We feel like we’re missing an opportunity because everyone says there are lots of buyers, but there’s nothing we can do.”

Frustrated shoppers and would-be sellers like the Cicerones are setting the pace for the housing market’s spring selling season, the March through June period when more than half of U.S. home sales take place. The market’s getting a late start this year because so much of the country has been in the grips of bad weather, said Dean Maki, chief U.S. economist for Barclays PLC in New York.

“There aren’t many people who want to drive around looking for homes in a blizzard, and there aren’t many sellers who can put their homes on the market unless they have some place to move to,” Maki said. “We’ve seen sales take a hit so far, lagging where they usually are, but we think the next few months will make up for it.”
